There’s so many things to do in Rotorua, even if the weather isn’t playing ball. You'll be surprised to see that they’re not all indoor attractions, some of our outdoor activities are perfect to do on a rainy day.
1 Hot Pools
Ok, you’ve probably figured this one out for yourself already, but we’re going to state the obvious and mention that a soak in a thermal mineral pool is a perfect rainy day activity in Rotorua. Our Pergola Pool is covered and the Sit and Soak Pool has shade sails, but there’s something really special about being in an outdoor hot pool when raindrops are falling.
2 3D Trick Art Gallery
This indoor attraction is fun for all the family, and something a little bit different. Let your creativity run wild as you jump in the frame of some incredible themed murals and take some seriously funny photos in this crazy world of 3D Trick Art.
3 Off Road New Zealand
Mud is a major part of the fun at Off Road New Zealand, so an ideal place to go when the weather is wet, as the rain makes it even muddier! With a choice of action-packed adventures on offer, you’ll find plenty to do on a rainy day, from 4 x 4 monster trucks to the Bush Safari through native New Zealand bush, or slide around the karting track!
4 National Kiwi Hatchery Tours
Find out more about our favourite feathered friends at the National Kiwi Hatchery. These guys are world leaders in kiwi conservation and know everything there is to know about these national treasures. Time your visit right and you might be lucky enough to see the kiwi in person and watch them get a health check.
If you’re going to get wet anyway, it doesn’t matter if it’s raining. Whitewater rafting on the Kaituna River is a must-do in Rotorua, and a great option on a wet day. This grade 5 trip is not for the faint hearted, a highlight of the journey is plummeting off the world’s highest commercially rafted waterfall!
6 Zorb Rotorua
Rolling down a hill in a huge inflatable ball can be done rain or shine. When you’re inside the Zorb you won’t know which way is up, let alone what the weather is doing. Don’t worry, you won’t get cold, they use warm water inside the Zorb in the cooler months, and there are hot tubs to soak in at the top and the bottom of the hill between rides.
7 Volcanic Hills Winery
Another great inside option is wine tasting at the Volcanic Hills Winery at Skyline Rotorua. We don’t grow grapes here in Rotorua, so winemaker Brent Park chooses grapes from the best wine regions in New Zealand, and brings them to Rotorua to craft them into award winning wines. The tasting room at the top of the gondola at Skyline has great views across the city and a lovely place to sit and watch the weather go by.
