In 1969 the local community put a proposal to the County Council of Rotorua to build a hot thermal pool. Permission was subsequently granted, and after various fundraising efforts and approximately 4000 hours of voluntary labour, the pool complex was officially opened in 1972.  

Today, the Waikite Valley Hot Pools are administered by the Rotorua Lakes council and run by The Living Waters of Waikite Valley Ltd under a lease agreement. 

The Living Waters of Waikite Valley Ltd have, over the past 18 years, developed the complex in so far that today it offers visitors 6 outdoor bathing options, private pools, camping facilities and viewing access to the Te Manaroa Spring.
