Taupo is home to New Zealand's largest lake, more trout than you can shake a stick at and some of the country's most stunning scenery. Located in the centre of New Zealand's North Island, Taupo is not just the huge and world renowned lake. It boasts Tongariro World Heritage National Park's fantastic ski areas, majestic Mount Ruapehu, beautiful countryside and a great range of action activities.
Lake Taupo District is one of New Zealand's top visitor destinations and there is no better central base than the Waikite Thermal Valley to discover it all from. Taupo is easily accessible by main roads through beautiful scenery from Waikite Valley. Within just an hour you are in the city centre of Taupo settled on the shores of the mighty lake looking out onto Mount Ruapehu.
Not far from the city centre, you'll find the thundering Huka Falls, New Zealand's most visited natural attraction. There is so much to see and do in the Taupo area. Travel further a field towards Tongariro World Heritage National Park and enjoy the famous Tongariro Crossing Walk - the best one day hike in New Zealand. Take a scenic drive on the Volcanic Loop Highway, or ski Whakapapa or Turoa Ski field.
